In the past, many patients’ only option for orthodontics was braces. However, as modern dentistry evolved, Invisalign joined the scene. They are much more desirable treatments for adults and teens as they use discreet, clear aligners that don’t use any metal. If you don’t know much about them, you may wonder if they are just as effective as previous methods of correcting a smile. Here’s what to know and how they might surprise you.
Will Invisalign Be Able to Fix My Bite Problems?
Invisalign works by wearing thin, plastic trays for 20 to 22 hours every day. They will apply pressure on your teeth, encouraging them to move into more desirable places. Better yet, this can even correct several common bite problems, such as:
- Overbite: When your upper teeth sit too far ahead of your lower ones, it’s a problem as it can cause jaw pain or increased tooth wear. Aligners are effective at correcting it, but you may need to wear rubber bands with them.
- Underbite: Inversely from the point above, this is when your bottom dental arch rests in front of the top one. This orthodontics can be used, but you may need elastics and other treatments as well.
- Crossbite: If parts of your upper teeth sit inside your lower ones when you bite, then you may have this malocclusion. Invisalign can still be effective, but it depends on your unique case.
- Open Bite: When you bite down, if your top and bottom teeth don’t meet and leave a gap (whether toward the front or back), then it can cause problems with eating and even talking. It’s possible to fix it with these discreet plastic trays.
How Can I Tell If Invisalign Can Fix My Bite Problems?
With all that being said, the only way to know if clear aligners are right for you is by talking to your dentist. They will be able to assess your unique case and determine what movements are needed. With an oral examination and X-rays, they’ll be able to tell whether or not Invisalign will be effective for you.
In most cases, mild to moderate malocclusions can get this treatment, while severe cases may call for another orthodontic treatment. If you find yourself in the latter group, then don’t feel disheartened. Your dentist will work with you to get you to a healthier bite that’s effective and helps you feel more confident. Regardless of what’s true for you, look forward to getting an aligned grin that you are more comfortable with.
