What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small posts that can be crafted from a few different types of biocompatible materials, which means they can fuse with the jawbone, including titanium, ceramic, and zirconia. The implants are then surgically placed within the bone to restore the foundational root structure of the missing teeth, allowing them to act as a strong support system for any type of restoration to be attached to, including a free-standing crown, bridge, or denture.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The process of getting dental implants can often be categorized into four distinct steps, with each one contributing to the lasting, future success of the treatment. Remember, this process typically spans several months and requires a firm commitment to taking care of your smile. That said, everyone’s journey looks a little different, but we’ll be sure you know exactly what to expect. Here’s a closer look at how the process normally plays out.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation

The first step on your journey to receiving dental implants is coming by our office for a consultation with Dr. Abboushi. During this visit, he’ll carefully examine your mouth and take diagnostic images of your orofacial structures, to determine if your gum and bone tissue is healthy enough to support dental implant posts. Some patients may require a preparatory procedure before they can receive implants, such as a bone graft or periodontal therapy. In any case, we’ll be sure you’re an ideal candidate before moving forward with scheduling your procedure.
Dental Implant Surgery

The implant placement surgery is a fairly straightforward process and Dr. Abboushi is able to assist in single-tooth implant cases, while also working alongside some of the most renowned local implant specialists for those with more complex tooth loss cases. Your mouth is fully numbed for the surgery, and after small openings are made in the gum tissue to access the jawbone, the posts are placed in precise angles wherever they’re needed. One or more posts can be used, in either or both of the arches.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment

Following the actual surgery comes perhaps the most important phase of the whole process: osseointegration. This refers to the natural fusion between the biocompatible implant posts and the jawbone tissue. This is how dental implants can replace the root of a lost tooth; the posts will become fully integrated and sturdier as they heal over the course of several months. After this has happened, the abutment pieces are attached on top of the posts via a small, second procedure. These connector pieces will eventually house your custom-made restoration(s).
Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations

The final step of your dental implant journey is receiving your custom-made restoration(s)! These are designed specifically for your smile and can replace any number of missing teeth no matter where they were located. A crown can be used, as can a bridge or even a personalized denture. We’ll be sure they’re polished and adjusted as needed before sending you off into the world to enjoy your newly rebuilt smile!
